The debut self-titled LP from Sydney’s 5 Seconds of Summer has hit the half million mark in the United States.
With total sales this week at 507,000, it is the 17th album to hit silver in the US in 2014. A year ago at this point 26 albums had surpassed the same threshold, although Taylor Swift’s new 1989 is expected to do 1 million first week.
Released in the US on Capitol in July, 5 Seconds of Summer debuted at #1 with first week sales of 259,000. They are the first Australian-based act to debut at #1 in the US with their debut album (Men At Work’s debut album Business As Usual reached #1 in the US in 1982 where it stayed 15 weeks but did not debut at top spot).
5 Seconds of Summer also topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, NZ, Portugal and Spain. In the US, the She Looks So Perfect EP sold 316,000.
