apple music reaches new download milestone

Apple Music for Android has surpassed 10 million downloads on the Google Play store, nearly ten months after it was released on the platform.

Specifically, the app’s total number of installs is now between 10 million and 50 million, up from between 5 million and 10 million. (To put it in perspective, Angry Birds has between 100 million and 500 million installs).

Apple Music expanded to Android in November 2015, four months after the streaming music service debuted on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The app sports a design and features that closely resemble those on the iOS version.

As of June 2016, Apple Music had 15 million paying subscribers, compared to Spotify’s 30 million. In its latest strategy to catch up, Apple Music offered users personalised music playlists with the “My New Music Mix” offering a mix of 25 tracks based on their listening history, and designed to compete with Spotify’s “Discover Weekly”.

Following an update in May, Android users pay a monthly US$9.99 ($4.99 for students) and family rates for six people is $14.99. Apple is now offering a 12- month gift card at $99, which when you work it out, offers a 18% saving with a monthly cost of $8.25.

Apple device owners will see the app getting a total revamping in iOS 10. Among the improvements are the way tracks are organized and an improved design that puts large and bold text at the forefront.
