bali songwriting invitational announces sixth year

The Bali Songwriting Invitational, a co-initiative of Universal Music Australia, returns to Ubud May 24 to June 2.

It was set up in 2010 by Island Records Australia’s managing director Michael Taylor (now Universal Music co-Managing Director) and Peter Coquillard of New York’s Bill Silva Management and is sponsored by Universal Music Publishing and APRA AMCOS. The idea was to gather together 25 specially invited producers and songwriters from around the world for seven days in a picturesque location to collaborate and record demos of new songs in five star studios. Last year 43 songs emerged.

In the past five years, among the Australians who took part in sessions were: Kate Miller-Heidke, Nick Jonas, Gary Go, Delta Goodrem, Havana Brown, 360, Megan Washington, Ricki Lee, Chance Waters, Julian Hamilton (of The Presets), Gin Wigmore and Marvin Priest. They joined international hit songwriters as Bonnie McKee, Brian Lee, Julie Frost, Herbie Critchlow and Heather Bright.

Last October, the event expanded to Europe, when Taylor and Coquillard ran it in Montenegro. It was held on the 50-meter super-yacht of Schools of Audio Engineering (SAE) founder Tm Misner. Among those who attended were producers/songwriters as Steve Lillywhite. Stuart Crichton, Mitch Allan and Gary Clarke with UK and US artists as Tom Prior and Riva Parvin. Over 18 songs were composed and demo’ed in the recording rooms aboard the yacht.
