Courtney Barnett’s 10-minute feature on Channel 7’s Sunday Night saw 674,000 metro viewers tune in last night, giving the show a #9 ranking of the free-to-air share.

As the first Australian independent artist to be featured on the show, the singer-songwriter beat out ABC’s Poldark (617,000), Channel Ten’s Modern Family (600,000) and Network Nine’s Inside The Mafia (567,000).

Most of those tuning in to Sunday Night were from her home base of Melbourne (182,000), followed by her native Sydney (158,000), then Perth (136,000), Brisbane (111,000) and Adelaide (87,000). The top show in the same time slot last night was Seven News (1,433,000), followed by Nine News (1,268,000) and House Rules on Network Seven (1,131,000).

Barnett has fast become a chart climbing export with her debut LP Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit peaking at #4 on the ARIA Albums chart and at #20 on the Billboard 200. The record also peaked at #1 on four Billboard categories including folk, independent, alternative and rock. In the UK, where Barnett did the interview, the album peaked at #16. The record was released through her own Milk! Records and Remote Control.

Last year Barnett made her US TV debut on none other than The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and this year performed on The Ellen Show. She was also awarded The 2015 Grulke Prize award for Developing Non-US Act at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas.
