Should I stay or should I go? Musicians question presence on Facebook over data breaches

Musicians have begun to assess whether they want to have a presence on Facebook following the social media platform’s data breaches.

Massive Attack announced on Twitter that they’d left their accounts after a New York Times report recently detailed how a political data firm hired by Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign collected information from over 50 million Facebook users without their permission. Cher has also called out the social media platform for the incident.

Although Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg would go on to apologise for the “breach of trust” that the scandal has discovered, an official statement from the site denied that the scandal was a “data breach”.

In the last 24 hours, both Cher and Massive Attack have released statements explaining their respective departures from the social networking site.

“2day I did something very hard for me,” Cher said. “Facebook has helped me with my charity & there are amazing young people there,” but today I deleted my account.”
