double j pick of the week emile haynie

Emile Haynie Ft. Andrew Wyatt & Brian Wilson
Falling Apart
(UMA)

It's a bizarre idea bringing together the vocalist from one of the most revered electro-pop acts around, one of the most successful modern hip hop and mainstream indie producers and one of the greatest songwriters in the history of music. But Falling Apart, the latest single from Emile Haynie, is proof that such an odd combination can really work.

Haynie has produced some monster tracks in recent years – Kanye's Runaway, Bruno Mars' Locked Out Of Heaven, Lana Del Rey's Born To Die and Eminem's Guts Over Fear to name but a few. Here he grabs Miike Snow vocalist Andrew Wyatt and the incomparable genius behind The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, for a charming regal sounding classic pop song. It's not mindblowing and Brian Wilson's little vocal flourishes don't add all that much, but for some reason it all just feels right.

It's well written, brilliantly produced and altogether pleasant pop music that is incentive enough to see what else Haynie has managed on his debut album.
