Former Melbourne nightclub figure and radio presenter jailed for drug smuggling

Former Melbourne nightclub figure and radio presenter Robert Oung has been jailed for his role in smuggling nearly half a kilo of ketamine into Australia two years ago.

The County Court sentenced him to three years jail, with the stipulation he must serve at least six months before being eligible for a three-year good-behaviour bond.

The court had heard that the 43-year old promoter and volunteer presenter for Melbourne narrowcast dance radio station Kiss FM had been hooked on the drug.

In April 2016, he and DJ Kasey Roy Taylor journeyed to India.

In an apartment in Delhi, each gulped down about 70 cling-wrapped, wax-dipped portions of the party drug (445 grams) and tried to bring them into Australia.

They were stopped by border force officials at Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport.

Both passed out half the pellets at the airport, and then at Alfred Hospital.

“You took an enormous risk in swallowing such a large amount of it [the drug]," Judge Gregory Lyon told Oung.

The accused had tried to argue that the drugs were not meant for commercial sale, but that was rejected by the jury.

The judge noted Oung now lives in the coastal town of Rye with a new partner, fixing and selling BMX bicycles.
