PRESS RELEASE:

22 year old Sydney folktronica artist Gordi (aka Sophie Payten) today announced that she has signed an exclusive publishing deal with Mushroom Music Publishing, Australia’s iconic independent music publisher. The rising songstress joins the likes of Vance Joy, Chet Faker, The Jezabels and Mansionair on Mushroom’s local roster.

The signing follows the release of her latest single ‘Can We Work It Out’ [Independent/Hey Alfalfa] last month, as well as Mushroom Publishing’s Managing Director Ian James being voted the world’s leading music publisher at the 2015 International Music Industry Awards in Los Angeles this year.

Linda Bosidis, Mushroom Publishing’s Head of A&R said, “When Gordi plays live you witness a unique connection.  Her natural humour, tenderness and ease with the audience is striking.  Her songs express personal experience, they radiate a familiarity and form a swift knowing bond with the listener. We are thrilled to the core to be working with Gordi, bring it on!”

On the signing, Gordi says, "When I told someone recently that I was signing to Mushroom Publishing, they told me it was the best decision I would make in my career. After meeting the whole team and getting to know Linda and Erol, I have every confidence that Mushroom Publishing is the place for me. I know how much they value the creativity and individuality of their artists and I couldn’t be more excited to have their support"Gordi's publishing will be represented outside Australia/New Zealand through Mushroom Publishing’s international affiliates, including BMG Chrysalis.

Gordi caused a stir in the latter part of 2014 with her track ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’, a luminous pop track which drew comparisons ranging from Angel Olsen, Ásgeir, Joni Mitchell and Tallest Man On Earth. The 22 year-old Canowindra local was quickly added to rotation on triple j and community radio around Australia and named triple j’s Unearthed Feature Artist earlier this year.

With ethereal, worldly vocals punctuated by wonderful arrangements, her follow up singles ‘Can We Work It Out’ and ‘Taken Blame’ served as further offerings of what should be a busy 2015-16 for Gordi, which have included invitations to various showcase events including BIGSOUND in Brisbane as well as being named the recipient of the APRA Josh Pyke Partnership award (which she spoke to ABC’s 730 Report last week).  She has also collaborated with Iceland’s Sin Fang and Los Angeles’ Ghost Loft with a number of other exciting projects in the works.

Gordi’s latest single ‘Can We Work It Out’ has already had over 150,000 plays on Spotify in its first two weeks, reached number 3 on the Hype Machine charts and was added to rotation on triple j shortly after Zan Rowe gave the track its world premiere. Gordi recently joined Ben Lee on his east coast tour and recently supported Jinja Safari in Sydney.

Mushroom Publishing was established in 1972 by Michael Gudinski.

Gordi will be appearing at BIGSOUND 2015 in Brisbane 8, 9 and 10 September. She supports George Maple at Manning Bar in Sydney tonight.
