I Killed The Prom Queen released from Malaysia

Despite their initial fears they could be detained for up to 14 days, Adelaide metal band I Killed The Prom Queen have been released from a Malaysian immigration lock-up and will be back in Australia today.

The five were detained after their Kuala Lumpur show on the weekend, part of a week-long run of dates through South East Asia behind their Beloved album.  Immigration officials deemed that improper paperwork by the show’s promoter meant they had performed without a proper permit.

Guitarist Jona Weinhofen emphasised they had not been deported but released – and, apparently, with an apology from the head of Immigration.

During their brief stay at the detention facility at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport, the band were stuck in a cell with 30 other men

Weinhofen’s mother Ruth Lock told ABC Radio her son had called her on a borrowed phone. “They had all their gear, wallets, passports and phones confiscated. They don’t know where their luggage is,” she said.

They also slept on a tiled floor and shared a hole in the floor toilet with the other 30. 

I Killed The Prom Queen have no plans to return to Kuala Lumpur. Weinhofen tweeted, “Sorry Malaysia but after this horrible experience I don’t think we will return in a hurry.”
