iheartradio now has over 100 million registered users

iHeartRadio has surpassed 100 million registered users, the company announced.

“This means that in just seven months (since August 2016), we’ve added 10 million registered users and couldn’t be more excited to welcome everyone to the family!” the company said in a statement.

It is the second streaming platform to hit this mark, after Spotify in June 2016 (this month revealing it has 50 million paying customers).

iHeartRadio achieved the 50 million mark in June 2014.

iHeartRadio’s use of the phrase “registered” indicates that 100 million have opened accounts with it. But this does not mean they are actively still using it. iHeartRadio has chosen not to crunch those numbers (at least publicly).

Pandora, for instance, no longer bothers to report the volume of registered users since it hit 250 million in 2014. Rather it focuses only on monthly active users (that is, those who use it at least once a month), currently numbering 81 million.

Nevertheless, iHeartRadio is in celebratory mode. It’s launched a live Top 100 station and six 100-song playlists of the most-thumbed-up songs on its platform in pop, alternative, rock, classic rock, country and hip-hop.

Its president Darren Davis said it would continue to provide features “for our listeners who want to enhance their radio experience."

Davis emphasises that while Spotify and Apple Music are all about streaming, his company sees the format as complementing what it does.

Two months ago, iHeartRadio Plus began offering offline listening, unlimited skips and replays and customized stations at $4.99 a month. iHeartRadio All Access is an on-demand streaming tier with a Napster-powered catalogue of millions of songs at $9.99 a month.

That’s in addition to its free radio streaming offering, which is powered by the company’s 850-plus terrestrial radio stations.

The company announced, “We’ve also expanded our podcast offerings to now feature more than 5,000 podcasts across 15 different categories – so there’s something for everyone!

“And, we’re available across 90 unique platforms from wearables and gaming devices, to in-home and auto. iHeartRadio is truly with you anywhere you go!”

With its ‘100 million’ announcement, iHeart also released statistics on its users’ listening habits.

The most listened-to song is Blake Shelton’s Boys Round Here. Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man is the most thumbed-up song. Drake is the most thumbed-up artist, and the most listened-to artist station is Luke Bryan Radio.
