PRESS RELEASE

"I can’t think of anyone in the entire country who touched so many different musicians in so many different ways” - The Sydney Morning Herald

The second Jackie Orszaczky Music Lecture and Concert, in conjunction with APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Office, will be held at The Basement in Sydney on Tuesday 30th May.

The inaugural event held last year, with Lucky Oceans as the guest lecturer, was a sold out success with excellent reviews and 2017 is expected to be no different.

Jackie Orszaczky – a Hungarian-Australian bassist, bandleader and composer based in Sydney - had an enduring influence on the musicians around him and it’s from these peers and players’ desire to honour Jackie’s memory that the concept for this lecture and concert was born.

In this special event the late composer/performer’s work, musical ideas and philosophy will be reflected and celebrated. The night will perpetuate the legacy of a great Australian musician whose enormous influence over 30 years is not well known well to the general public. Jackie died in 2008.

The 2017 guest lecturer will be playwright, librettist, author, journalist, drummer and critic John Shand. John has written about music (and occasionally theatre) for over 30 publications, including for The Sydney Morning Herald for over 24 years. His books include Don’t Shoot The Best Boy!, The Film Crew At Work, Jazz – The Australian Accent and The Phantom Of The Soap Opera. He also contributed to The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be asked to deliver the second Jackie Orszaczky Music Lecture. I remain a massive fan of Jackie Orszaczky’s work in all its diversity, and if the pantheon of musicians has, like some people’s idea of heaven, multiple levels, Jackie’s place is assuredly in the topmost.” - John Shand

The lecture will be followed by a concert of Jackie’s music by members of his bands and will include

Tina Harrod: Vocals, Darren Percival: Vocals, Hamish Stuart: DrumsDave Symes: Bass, Arne Hanna: Guitar, Scott Leishman: Guitar, Clayton Doley: Keys, Stu Hunter: Keys, James Greening: Trombone, Anthony Kable: Trombone, Matt Keegan: Tenor Sax & Virne Sanzone: Backing Vocals.

They will perform a set of Orszaczky penned songs and instrumental pieces.

In conjunction, The Jackie Orszaczky Composition Competition   will be conducted in the weeks leading up to the lecture - open to all APRA members. Writers are to compose a piece in the spirit of Jackie’s music and submit an MP3. The winner will be selected by the members of the Orszaczky band. There is a cash prize of $2,000.00, and the winner will be announced on the night.

"Jackie Orszaczky was a hugely influential songwriter, performer and bandleader who made a major and enduring impact on Australian music. He was an APRA member for 32 years and inspired musicians of all ages. APRA AMCOS is proud to honour his legacy with The Jackie Orszaczky Composition Competition.”   - Brett Cottle CEO, APRA AMCOS
