Martyn P. Casey, Philip Stevens, for WA Hall of Fame

Martyn P. Casey of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and talent manager Philip Stevens will be inducted into West Australia’s WAM Hall of Fame this week.

After moving to Australia from England in 1965 aged five, Casey joined two of Australia’s most influential bands – The Triffids and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Starting out in Perth with The Nobodies and A2Z, he linked up with The Triffids in September 1982 just as they started developing into a globally acknowledged outfit with the classic Born Sandy Devotional, In The Pines and The Black Swan

In 1989, after a brief stint with The Blackeyed Susans, he plugged in with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in April 1990, who were touring behind The Good Son. He remained with Cave for his Grinderman project. A talented artist, his work was adorned on the 2009 book Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids.

Philip Stevens manages John Butler Trio, The Waifs and San Cisco and, previously, Little Birdy. He emerged on the WA scene running the live music venue Mojo’s Bar in North Fremantle and tour company Jazz Dive Promotions. With Butler and The Waifs, he started Jarrah Records, one of the first local labels to set up as a profit-share, artist-empowered business enterprise. Jarrah was also the first artist-owned independent label to debut at #1 on ARIA charts, a significant achievement at that time for the Australian independent sector.

Casey and Stevens will be inducted at the WA Music Awards on Friday 7 at the Capitol in Perth.
