Melbourne’s Chapel Street lampoons Sydney lockout laws

Melbourne’s entertainment and retail precinct Chapel Street in the suburb of Prahran is lampooning Sydney’s lockout laws in a “guerrilla-style” campaign to promote itself as a destination. 

Hundreds of posters have been displayed through the Sydney CBD featuring a cartoon figure of NSW Premier Mike Baird. He’s wearing Y-front briefs and nightcap, and holding a 1920s-style candle. “Play til it’s my bed time, not Mike Baird time”, goes the slogan. 

The campaign is the brainchild of Chrissie Maus, who recently joined the Chapel Street Precinct association as Marketing & Events Director after stints at Nova and Australian Radio Network.

“We’ve got nothing against Premier Mike Baird,” she said. “We’re simply treating Sydneysiders as responsible adults.

“If you are fed-up with NSW’s draconian entertainment laws that have killed off the once vibrant precincts of Oxford Street and Kings Cross, there is an alternative to shop, play and stay! Melbourne’s Chapel Street boasts some of the country’s best bubbles and bites, and it’s where revellers can party till sunrise.”
