PRESS RELEASE:

This morning, triple j Breakfast’s Matt & Alex snuck into Perth’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College to surprise the 2015 Unearthed High winner in front of their whole school.

Unearthed High, triple j’s annual search for Australia’s best high school music act, is one of the most rewarding things we get to do every year. Through it we meet so many talented young people just beginning to forge a musical career, full of incredible ideas and potential, which will come to shape the Australian music landscape one day. None more so than our 2015 Unearthed High winners, Mosquito Coast.

At just fourteen years of age, singer Naomi Robinson put up flyers around her neighbourhood looking for bandmates, leading her to meet drummer Conor Barton. Naming themselves after a Harrison Ford film and taking musical influence from everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Karen O, they started making crystalline, sun-bleached indie pop as Mosquito Coast. Now in year 12, the duo give us  ‘Call My Name’, an uncomplicated and wistful song with instant nostalgia, feeling both warmly familiar and brand new at the same time, proving to be a winning formula.

triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe says ‘Mosquito Coast squeezed ‘Call My Name’ into Unearthed High mere days before the competition closed but since then those charming, breezy hooks have been stuck to the ears of triple j listeners and  presenters alike. Just as ‘Call My Name’ is filled with a magnetic spirit, discovering Mosquito Coast has been a true joy and we couldn’t be prouder to call them our Unearthed High champs for 2015.’

As part of the prize, Mosquito Coast will now head into the triple j studios to record a track, which will get played on triple j and triple j Unearthed. Plus they’ll get professional advice from a top Australian act and their manager, with the choice of Illy, The Jezabels, Alison Wonderland, Northlane or Art vs Science.

Head to triplejunearthed.com to listen, review and share all of the incredibly talented Unearthed High finalists.
