Music Australia has issued an election statement to the Federal Government to back the contemporary music sector.

The key priorities and call to arms are:

 Strengthen recognition for and investment in contemporary music as an art form

 Arts portfolio to champion value of music industry across government

 Introduce tax incentives as a structural reform to drive sector jobs and audience growth

 Expand current investments including to National Live Music Office and Sounds Australia

The contemporary music industry is a key contributor to Australia’s culture and economy. It contributes four to six billion dollars to the economy, over 40 million Australians attend live performances, and it generates tens of thousands of jobs annually. Our musicians are central to our cultural identity, and music is part of our daily lives.

Despite impressive figures, the industry is not robust and receives limited Government support.

“Contemporary music is an industry which employs thousands of people, generates significant revenues, is a consistent exporter, and a major part of the tourism economy. Yet it lags other countries and industries in government backing and investment,” said Music Australia CEO Chris Bowen.

“Our industry is poised for tremendous global success, and our musicians are in demand across the world. What is needed now is strategic government backing, tailored investment, and effective coordination.”

The Australian Contemporary Music Industry has collaborated on a soon to be released, industry wide plan. This provides a comprehensive blueprint for growth.

“Now is the time for the Government to back one of our most potent sectors,” he added.

Australian music can deliver powerful results. Targeted investments and tax incentives for music will generate employment growth, increase export incomes, foster dynamic small businesses, grow regional tourism, and create more cultural opportunities for Australia’s millions of music fans.

Music Australia has developed the National Contemporary Music Business Plan in partnership with all music peak bodies and specialist agencies. This Plan is comprehensive in scope, covering, jobs, skills, investment, economic contribution and cultural impact. It will be released next month.
