rdio launches free internet radio service in nz

Music streaming service Rdio has introduced an ad-supported free internet radio model in New Zealand. Users have no need for a trial or subscription to access algorithmic artist and genre-based stations, those based on tastemakers and those programmed to fit the listener’s mood or activity.

Rdio claims its internet radio service “features 20 times more music than the leading internet radio service and a wide variety of innovative features for personalization and discovery.”

“We are in the very early days of music streaming and there is a huge opportunity to bring this remarkable experience to people around the world,” said Anthony Bay, San Francisco-based CEO of Rdio. “We’re focused on offering the world’s best streaming experience built around the listener – anytime and anywhere – tuned to you.

“We now lead with a free stations experience combined with the option to upgrade to a full on-demand subscription service that offers access to any song, album or playlist. We are thrilled to begin offering this unique combination to users in New Zealand.”

Rdio made its launch in New Zealand in January 2012, at the same time it made its debut in Australia.

The two countries share Rdio’s tie-ups with Live Nation and the Laneway festival. The company also featured New Zealand content on shows as the New Music Weekly playlist and Rdio Recommends, and supported NZ acts as Broods, Ladyhawke, Tiny Ruins, Doprah, Benny Tipene, I Am Giant, Ginny Blackmore, Connan Mockasin, Little Bark, K.One and Sid Diamond.
