PRESS RELEASE:
Last month, Red Bull Music Academy revealed 11 events and over 40 artists coming to Sydney for the city’s first ever Red Bull Music Academy Weekender from September 8-11.
As part of the four-day festival, seminal hip-hop label Stones Throw celebrate a double decade of independence on the Friday evening at Sydney’s Manning Bar with an all-star lineup. Founded in 1996 by charismatic DJ and producer Chris Manak AKA Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw Records has been responsible for some of contemporary music’s landmark releases by an illustrious cast of hip-hop artists.
Today, Red Bull Music Academy announce the LA godfather of electro, Egyptian Lover and Australia’s only ever Stones Throw signee, Jonti as two special additions to Weekender celebrations. The pair join supreme turntablist J Rocc, Mndsgn, Katalyst and Peanut Butter Wolf for what is destined to be an unforgettable evening.
Los Angeles based producer, DJ and rapper Greg Broussard - otherwise known as electro rap artist,Egyptian Lover will make his welcomed return to Sydney with a live performance of his pivotal releases dating from the 80s to present day. Born from the electro scenes of New York and Miami, Broussard’s mid-80s cut ‘Egypt, Egypt’ became one of his and the community’s biggest – the song’s breakdance scene a club staple. His live 808 based performances in Miami are credited by some with inspiring the Miami bass scene, and his early records have been cited as influences from electronic music’s biggest. Having worked with the likes of M.I.A, James Pants and more, Egyptian Lover will continue his reign this September as electro rap’s blueprint master.
Also joining the party is Australia’s only Stones Throw signing, Jonti. The Sydney via South Africa multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and vocalist will represent his hometown at the Weekender with a live set spanning his unique, pop-tinted arrangements and productions. Recently appearing on The Avalanches globally anticipated sophomore record, and having recorded with the likes of Mark Ronson, Santigold and Sean Lennon and the Dap Kings – Jonti is one of Australia’s brightest exports.
To celebrate being added to the line up, Jonti has created an exclusive all vinyl mix of his favourite Stones Throw tracks. Listen HERE.
Given its longstanding affiliation with Red Bull Music Academy events in Sydney and across the world, it seems only right that Stones Throw commemorate their twentieth year of independence as part of the Weekender. Taking place alongside the festivals globally-recognised programming that sees the likes of Larry Heard and Flight Facilities The Stones Throw 20th Anniversary presented by Red Bull Music Academy is not one to be missed.
