South Australia’s Hall of Fame to launch next week

South Australia’s Hall of Fame launches Friday March 28 at the Goodwood Institute in Adelaide. It will be opened by veteran radio identity David Day, who has donated 40 years of music memorabilia.

Day came up with the Hall of Fame idea years back. It is now run by the newly-formed Adelaide Music Collective and peak music association Music SA, and curated by well known cultural curator Matt Syncock.

Among items on display are a test pressing of Cold Chisel’s Khe Sanh, a single by The Moonshine Jug and String Band who later became The Angels, Coke bottle tops from 1956 featuring members of Penny Rockets, invoices from Central Booking Agency (including payment to ’Johnny ’Farnham for $120 in the 1960s) and an original brass medallion given out to members of the 1960s Oxford Club music venue – which coincidentally was housed at the Goodwood Institute.

AMC founder – international drummer Enrico ’Mick’ Morena – told The Music Network that the Hall of Fame was part of an overall strategy to bring older and younger musicians from Adelaide together. It includes six AMC concerts at the 212-seater Goodwood Institute which will include an emerging solo act, a better known band, and a headlining heritage act.

At each concert, two pioneers of the SA music industry will be recognised for their contribution. The March 28 concert will be headlined by John Schumann OA & Hugh McDonald of Redgum with John Bywaters (The Twilights) and Peter Tilbrook (The Masters Apprentices) honoured.

“The value of these pioneers as mentors to younger players is immeasurable,” Morena said. “It’s a good way for the different generations to better get to know each other.”

Future recipients include John and Rick Brewster of The Angels, John Swan, John Schumann, singer songwriter Doug Ashdown, former Rose Tattoo guitarist Rob Riley and ‘50s singer Johnny Mac OAM.

The Adelaide Music Collective includes APRA’s Gary Burrows, Taasha Coates from The Audreys, David Grice and Dr. Elizabeth Reid of MusicSA, Arts SA’s Becc Bates, festival administrator Anne Wieberg and Rocola Music principal Quinton Dunn.
