Globally, hip hop is the most popular style as far as streaming consumers are concerned.
It makes up 25% of total consumption and 30.3% of all on-demand audio streams, while the second largest genre, rock, sits at 18.1%.
Last year 37% of music listeners used audio streaming services around the world – a figure which rose to 62% in the 16-24 age demographic.
So it’s not surprising that when Spotify Australia released its annual Year in Music lists – including top artists, albums, tracks and memorable moments of 2017 – Bliss N’Eso and Hilltop Hoods were in a predominant role.
Flume was the most streamed Australian artist of the year, but several emerging names as Amy Shark, Starley, Tash Sultana, Dean Lewis and Vera Blue also made their presence felt.
To absolutely no one’s surprise, Ed Sheeran dominated the Australian and global lists, with 47 million monthly listeners globally on Spotify.
÷ (Divide) album was the most streamed album of the year, both in Australia and worldwide, with 3.1 billion streams globally.
‘Shape of You’ became the most streamed track of all time on Spotify, now with over 1.4 billion streams globally.

An Australian even put together an “I Love Gingers” playlist - which featured 48 songs by Sheeran - while 598,347 Australians made playlists that have “love” in the title.
"This year’s headline results don’t come as a huge surprise - Ed Sheeran obviously had a massive year and is a streaming powerhouse, and the welcome addition of Taylor Swift to Spotify was always going to be received well by Australian fans (and positively reflected in streams)," music editor for Spotify Australia Peter Stevens told TMN.
In terms of what the data indicates about next year’s prospects, both Stevens and Spotify Australia senior music editor Alicia Sbrugnera both look to the streaming services’ Wrapped data for additional insights.
"Through the Wrapped data on our flagship A1 Hip Hop and Urban Flavour playlists, we are also seeing representation from up and coming artists such as Manu Crook$ and Carmouflage Rose, whom we see as a sign of things to come for local Hip Hop in 2018," Stevens said.
"The Wrapped data on our Indie Mixtape playlist demonstrates our audiences appetite for local music, with 70% of the top 100 tracks coming from Australian artists - a positive sign for local artists and fans alike moving into 2018," Sbrugnera added.
