With Amazon’s arrival in Australia said to be in weeks rather than months, The CommBank Retail Insights Report finds that Australian music fans - especially the younger demos - are already set to embrace it.

Almost 50% of those surveyed indicated they’ll buy music, as well as games, media and books, while 35% believe their bills will include consumer electronics.

About one in three people are set to subscribe to Amazon Prime for its extra benefits.

These include the ad free on-demand streaming service Amazon Music which offers over 2 million songs, thousands of playlists and stations, Alexa voice-integration, and personalised recommendations.

The report says that about half of millennials and younger will take out Amazon Prime subs. The figure drops to 20% of baby-boomers and 13% of pre-boomers.

Overnight Amazon Prime expanded its music services for UK subscribers. These included introducing “hundreds of online radio stations” and on-screen lyrics for users to sing along while they listen.

The CommBank report suggests that only about a quarter of retailers have a plan for competing although 52% perceive Amazon will be a threat. 13% see its arrival as an opportunity for their businesses.
