As reported by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, The NFL has notified pop stars Rihanna, Coldplay and Katy Perry that they are under consideration to perform at next year’s Super Bowl 49.

Some performers were allegedly asked if they would be willing to give a slice of their post-Super Bowl proceeds to the league in exchange for being offered a spot at the half time show.

Traditionally, the NFL doesn’t pay music acts to perform, instead covering their travel and production expenses. However, considering the cost of legal fees that the organisation has had to contend with due to unscheduled mishaps like Janet Jackon’s wardrobe malfunction and M.I.A’s middle finger scandal, having performers donate some of their post-show earnings may ease the hassle of further litigation.

The Super Bowl is pro football’s biggest stage, with last season’s Super Bowl XLVIII obtaining a viewership of 111.5 million.
