the flaming lips confirmed for mofo 2016

PRESS RELEASE:

American psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips bring their special brand of weird to Mofo (13–18 January 2016) this summer, taking to the outdoor stage at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

The Flaming Lips are the first artist revealed ahead of the full Mofo 2016 lineup, to be announced at 11am Friday 16 October, with tickets on sale from www.mofo.net.au

Mofo—the Museum of Old and New Art’s Festival of Music and Art in Tasmania, Australia—takes place across Hobart from 13–18 January 2016, peaking with a frenetic weekend occupying Mona’s subterranean galleries, cavernous spaces and sprawling, sunny agoras.

A highlight in Mofo's Three-Day Mona Pass, The Flaming Lips have railed against the rules of rock music for more than 30 years, establishing their reputation as purveyors of the weird and wonderful, which is perfectly befitting for a festival borne of Mona’s experimental ethos.

Formed in Oklahoma in the early eighties, The Flaming Lips have released more than 16 albums and broken Jay-Z’s Guinness World Record for the most live concerts in 24 hours (eight, if you’re wondering).

Over three decades, The Flaming Lips have collaborated with innovative artists of the time—from the recent MTV Video Music Awards performance with frontman Wayne Coyne’s close friend Miley Cyrus, to producing a Broadway musical of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots with director Des McAnuff (Broadway musicals The Who's Tommy and Jersey Boys), and gathering creative forces for the album The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon.

The ever-eclectic band has worked with Nick Cave, Yoko Ono, Lightning Bolt, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Sean Lennon, and Erykah Badu, to name but a few.

The Flaming Lips are renowned for their eccentricity; from stepping onto stage out of a glowing neon vagina; to Wayne Coyne performing inside his signature ‘space-bubble’ while crowd-surfing, with back-up dancers dressed as yetis, aliens and animals. There’s an art to being this weird, and we’re up for it at Mofo 2016.

Mofo is a project of Mona, supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania.

Mofo 2016 full lineup announced and tickets on sale 11am Friday 16 October AEDT from www.mofo.net.au
