Spanish police have begun investigations into a massive fire at the Tomorrowland Unite music festival in Barcelona.

22,000 EDM fans were evacuated from the one-day festival held last Saturday night in the city’s Parc de Can Zam de Santa Coloma de Gramanet.

The fire broke out on the left hand side of the stage, with one eyewitness claiming the stage "just exploded".

The fire then spread to the speaker system and a large video screen. Thousands viewed the incident as the festival was being livestreamed. 

festivThe stage was completely destroyed, causing the cancellation of sets by Steve Aoki, Afrojack and Ingrosso.

Promoters said the patrons would be refunded.

In a statement, they attributed the fire to “a technical malfunction".

Thanks to the professional intervention of the authorities all 22,000 visitors were evacuated safely and without reports of injuries.”

Local media reported that the fire was caused by a fireworks display which was part of the event.

The incident is the second evacuation of a major festival this year, after patrons at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany had to leave the site due to a terrorist threat.
