Social media juggernaut Twitter has officially launched the #BlueRoom, a new dedicated place for artists and VITs (Very Important Tweeters) to host Q&As with their fanbase. The feature is unique to Twitter Australia and kicked off with American alt-rockers Imagine Dragons on Sunday afternoon.

TMN caught up with the act at Twitter Australia’s offices after the recording of the Q&A to talk about social media as a tool for artists.

“Twitter is now a necessity for any band, it’s a way to have people gain awareness of when your shows are, where you’re playing," said frontman Dan Reynolds. "It’s a way to have a relationship with fans all over the world because it makes the world a smaller place.”

Social media has proven to be integral for many artists and labels, large and small, to keep fans up to date, market a show or just stay in touch. Of all the competing forms of social media, Twitter has proven to be vital in reaching the most amount of people without compromise of reach due to relevancy algorithms like the one in place on Facebook.

On this topic of competing forms, Reynolds said: “I think Twitter is just great because it is a quick, easy, succinct, very clean highlight of something you want to say that can be really profound, nonsense or really jokey, or it could be informative. It makes people have to be concise which is kind of a great thing because people think they have more to say than they really should most of the time.”
