youtube ceo says youtube red is really a music service

YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki has made the oddly-timed move of declaring that YouTube Red is primarily "a music service."

MBW reports that while speaking at a Code Media summit in California, Wojcicki also confirmed plans to roll YouTube Red out to around 100 countries.

“YouTube Red is a service that is really a music service," she said. "We have an amazing collection of music; we have all these music videos."

“And then on top of that it [offers] the ability to watch all of YouTube ads free, with the background and offline services. And on top of that we’ve actually been doing a number of YouTube Originals – we’ve done about 50 in the last two years.”

The declaration is perplexing, with YouTube reportedly set to unveil their own Spotify-style music streaming service; codenamed ’Remix’, soon.

It appears that ’Remix’ could replace Google Play Music, and has reportedly been fast-tracked following recent renewals of music deals with Universal, Warner and Sony.

YouTube Red is currently only available in Australia, the US, Mexico, New Zealand and South Korea, but the aforementioned licensing deals will allow it to expand further.

“This year you’ll also see Red expand into many more countries. We’re only in five countries right now.

"Now that we’ve finished all of our music deals we’re actually going to be expanding to a large number of countries.”
